What is Neglect?

The simplest definition of 'neglect' is:

"Fail to care for properly", and "the state of being uncared for".

In the context of caregiving, nelgect is a form of abuse where the perpetrator, who is responsible for caring for someone who is unable to care for themselves fails to do so. It is the ongoing failure to meet the needs of a child or vulnerable person.

It is also the most common form of abuse. intentional and unintentional. A young person or vulnerable person may be left hungry, dirty, without proper clothing, shelter, supervision or health care. This can put young people and children in danger.

Not every young person, child or vulnerable person is neglected intentionally, especially in times of social change such as resessions, job loss, changes in wlefare systems, and cost of living.

Some parents and care givers will do as much as they can with very little, some parents and care givers may be struggling to make ends meet or to make sure there is enough of everything. Parents and care givers themselves may be going without to make sure that their young and vulnerable get what they need.

If you suspect a young person or a vulnerable person is being neglected offer help and support rather than judging the skills of parents or care givers.

It is easy to pass judgement, we do it without realising, but before we pass judgement, we should offer help and support and help eaachother out.
