What is Psychological Abuse?

Psychological abuse involves the regular use and deliberate use of a range of words and non-physical actions.

It includes the use of words and non-physical actions that aim to hurt, injure, manipulate, weaken, frighten and threaten others, mentally and emotionally.

Signs of Psychological abuse

It can be difficult to recognise the signs of psychological abuse as there won't be any physical injuries or bruises. You can't see into the mind of a person, but you can observe their behaviours and the changes within their behaviours and emoitonal well-being.

Signs of psychological abuse include:

  • Lack of or change in confidence and self-esteem

  • Difficulties in controlling their emotions, for example unusual episodes of crying

  • Extreme behaviours such as overly demanding, aggressive, outbursts of challenging behaviours, becoming passive

  • Difficulties in making friends and maintaining relationships

  • Unusual inappropriate behaviours 

  • Change in appitite (over eating, under eating, skipping meals, vomiting after meals)

  • Becoming withdrawn

  • Anxiety, stress, depression other mental health concerns
